The potential anti-cancer effects of n-hexane (HSF) and dichloromethane fractions (DSF) of a brown macro-algae, Sargassum fulvellum were evaluated in estrogen receptor-negative MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. The effects of HSF and DSF on pro-apoptosis was assessed by studying the release of cytochrome c and the level of Bcl-xL which related with anti-adhesive effects. Cell cycle controlling proteins which associated with the level of CDK6 and phosphorylated cdc2 caused cell cycle arrest. The exposure of MDA-MB-231 cells to each fraction (HSF and DSF respectively) at concentration of 50 ¥ìg/ml for 24 hours resulted in the inhibition of cell growth and shrinking of cell morphology along with decreased expression of Rac and MAP kinases. The results suggested that the anti-cancer effects of two extracts act on pro-apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and the inhibition of cell growth.
